Opened in 1988, the Diego Rivera Mural Museum was built to house and exhibit one of the most famous Diego Rivera murals, Dream of a Sunday afternoon in the Alameda Central, originally made for the Hotel del Prado, which was destroyed by the 1985 earthquake. The rescue of the mural (15.67 m. long by 4.17 m. high and weighing 35 tons) gave birth to the museum. Rivera travels through almost four centuries of history and sets the scene in the iconic Alameda Central park.
